About

What exterior door replacement includes

Exterior door replacement starts with the opening, not just the door slab. We review the frame, sill, threshold, hinges, lockset, and weather seals so the new assembly matches the property and its daily use. Some projects need a slab change. Others call for a full frame and threshold replacement because the old opening has damage or poor fit. We explain that difference before documenting the scope. Door material, glass, swing direction, hardware, trim, and finish all affect the final selection. Our team guides finish-material and design choices when requested, then coordinates the work with the wider remodel plan.

Process

Steps for replacing the exterior door

1

Inspect the opening and failure points

We check the slab, frame, sill, threshold, hinges, latch, trim, and seals to identify the source of poor fit or water entry.

2

Plan the door and hardware selection

We review material, swing, glass, lockset, hinges, threshold, trim, and finish choices against the property's needs.

3

Prepare the documented scope

We provide a project consultation, then document the agreed scope before preparing the customized estimate.

4

Remove the old assembly

We remove the existing door and related parts with care around adjacent trim, flooring, siding, and interior finishes.

5

Fit, test, and hand over

We install the planned assembly, test the swing and latch, check seals and threshold contact, and review the completed scope with you.

Overall I enjoyed working with Linda and her team. Even though there were no major redesign of spaces and I knew exactly what tile/fixtures/cabinets etc I wanted I still was appreciative of her insight on certain details and choices. It was very easy to collaborate with her. She makes an effort to be in-tune with a client. She was very responsive and took care of everything that needed attention as soon as she was able too. She made sure that I was listened to and taken care of as a client with her subcontractors. I would work with her again.

Best remodel experience we have ever had. The oversight, careful workmanship and ownership of the project was above expectations. Our design team was amazing. We also had the same person do all the work start to finish and was a total Pro. Could not recommend enough and will be doing any and all projects through them. This place is a gem.

Leaving a long overdue review. Linda helped us remodel our bathroom and kitchen last year. We also did some flooring improvements, and some electrical and plumbing work along the way. The pricing was very reasonable, and we appreciated that Linda was always conscious of our budget, when we made adjustments to our plan. The work was delivered very quickly on promised timelines. She had some really good suggestions around the choice of flooring, which we are thankful for (especially looking back after a year). Also appreciate her sense of style.. it helped us make the right choices for countertops, tiles and fixtures. It all looks great, our guests often comment on how beautiful our kitchen looks. Thank you!

Questions about replacing an exterior door

Who provides exterior door replacement for Sammamish properties?

HomeRemodelSammamish.info provides exterior door replacement for Sammamish homeowners and commercial clients. We inspect the door assembly, frame, threshold, hardware, and nearby finishes before preparing the work scope. Our tradespeople are licensed, bonded, and insured, and we manage the replacement within the wider renovation plan when related work is included.

Can you replace the door without replacing the frame?

A door slab can be replaced without a new frame when the existing frame is sound and fits the selected slab. We check the jamb, sill, hinge locations, strike, threshold, and seals first. If the frame is damaged, shifted, or poorly sized, the documented scope may include the full door assembly so the new entry closes and seals correctly.

What changes the cost of replacing an exterior door?

Door material, glass, hardware, frame condition, threshold work, trim, and related repairs change the project cost. Access and nearby flooring or siding can affect the scope as well. We review these items during a free consultation, then prepare a customized estimate based on the agreed work rather than a door-only assumption.

What should I do if the new door still rubs or misses the latch?

A rubbing door or missed latch needs a fit check before further adjustment. We inspect hinge alignment, frame position, threshold contact, strike placement, and seal pressure. For a replacement project, we test the swing and latch after installation, then address documented fit issues within the planned work before reviewing the completed assembly.

Which materials can I consider for an exterior door?

Exterior doors may use wood, fiberglass, or steel, depending on the opening, finish goals, and use. Each option has different needs for trim, hardware, glass, and surface care. We guide the selection when requested and compare the material with the existing frame, threshold, nearby finishes, and property's design.

How do I prepare for a consultation in Sammamish, Washington?

A consultation is more useful when you share the door's symptoms, photos, preferred finish, and nearby remodel plans. Please clear access on both sides and note any draft, water mark, rubbing, or latch problem. We use those details with our opening review to prepare the documented scope and customized estimate.

Common Mistakes With Exterior Door Replacement

  • Choosing a slab by appearance alone can leave hinge, strike, or threshold mismatches. We measure the opening and check the existing hardware before documenting the selection.
  • Keeping a damaged frame can preserve drafts, water marks, or latch problems. We inspect the jamb, sill, and surrounding trim before deciding between slab and full assembly work.
  • Ignoring the floor transition can create an uneven threshold or unfinished trim joint. We check nearby flooring and set the threshold scope before installation.
  • Treating a latch problem as only a lockset issue can miss frame movement or hinge wear. We test the swing, strike, and seal contact together.

Key Points About Exterior Door Replacement

  • The opening condition decides whether the work needs a slab or full assembly.
  • A threshold affects floor transition, lower sealing, and door fit.
  • Hinges, strike placement, and lockset alignment affect safe closing.
  • Weather seals must contact the frame around the door.
  • Finish choices include material, glass, hardware, trim, and surface finish.

Scenarios

When Customers Call Us About Exterior Door Replacement

1

Drafts Around an Older Entry

A draft around an exterior door can come from worn seals, a shifted frame, or a low threshold. The visible gap doesn't always show the full problem. We inspect the slab, jamb, sill, and latch together, then prepare a replacement scope that fits the opening and connects with nearby trim and flooring.

2

Door Won't Latch After Movement

A door that rubs or misses its strike needs more than a new lockset. Hinge wear, frame movement, or an uneven opening can keep the latch from lining up. We check those parts before selecting a slab or full assembly, so the planned work addresses fit and safe closing.

3

Entry Upgrade During a Remodel

An exterior door replacement may sit beside new flooring, siding, paint, or trim work. Finish height and threshold details matter because a mismatch can leave a trip edge or an unfinished joint. We coordinate the door scope with the wider remodel plan and document selection choices before construction starts.
